Every point along the “shipping chain” listed below plays an important role individually and collectively within the shipping industry. This is what they do briefly..

Depot

A container depot is a defined area, where empty containers are dropped off for storage until it’s being picked up again. In Malaysia, it is common that depo also performs jobs such as cleaning, washing, repair and maintenance of the containers stored.

These are generally yard that stores mountains of containers for container owners. Examples of operators in Port Klang are New Eng Kong (NEK) Yard, Jambatan Merah Yard (JMY) and the list goes on..

Port / Terminal
Definition by Wikipedia, Port is a facility for receiving ships and transferring cargo. They are usually found at the edge of an ocean, sea, river or lake. Ports often have cargo-handling equipment such as cranes (operated by
longshoremen) and forklifts for use in loading/unloading of ships, which may be provided by private interests or public bodies. Often, canneries or other
processing facilities will be located near by. Harbour pilors and tugboats are
often used to maneuver large ships in tight quarters as they approach and leave the docks. Ports which handle international traffic have customs facilities.A port is a harbor with facilities like piers and docks. Here a ship can moor, load or unload all various kinds of cargo.

POO – Port of Origin – where cargo is first accepted for shipment.

POL – Port of Loading – where container is being loaded onto a vessel.

POD – Port Of Discharge – where a container is being discharged from a vessel.

Final destination – where the cargo is finally delivered to.

Terminal: A terminal is a part of the port. It is a defined area in which the containers are prepared for loading into the vessel or where they are stacked immediately after discharge from the vessel. Often terminal and ports are used interchangeably within the industry.

Warehouse
A warehouse is a place, where cargoes and goods are delivered, distributed or stored. A warehouse is used by importers, exporters, manufacturers and transport companies.

Haulage
Involves activity of trucking empty / laden containers from point to point. Usually powered by a prime-mover with a trailer. (yes, similar to Optimus Prime)

Consignor / Consignee
Consignor: Commonly called shipper or exporter in the industry, refers to the party (usually a company) who sells their product. Usually is the supplier / manufacturer or owner of the cargo / goods, which will be shipped by a carrier. Consignor normally prepares the goods for shipment, by packaging, labeling, and arranging for transit.

Consignee: Consignee is the person or company to whom the cargoes and goods are shipped, i.e. receiving party of the goods shipped. Commonly
referred to as importer or buyer by the industry.
