Shipping resource
This space will feature general information about shipping. From articles to video clips to images.
So, watch this space closely.
Similar to all business, shipping has its own set of interesting abbreviations, terms and conditions - from within, it facilitates the business. From a layman’s point of view, I’ll probably call it “barriers of entry” to the industry. Sharing with you here are some common (and interesting) terms and its meaning (from what i understand it to be at least). Note articles in here was written very much from a Malaysia perspective - i.e. relevant to the Malaysia context.
Can’t think of anything else but to start this off with the most basic and single most important document in the shipping world - a Bills of Lading - a brief introduction of what this document mean to the shipping world.
Followed by a diagram of export flow in the Malaysian context. Some things may have changed along the way but, reckon a large part of it remains the same. Import flows is shown in separate diagram.
An integral part within the shipping community in Malaysia, and most countries as well, are the forwarders / customes broker / freight forwarder. There’s been different interpretation of these terms across borders, buy this document explains it within the Malaysian context.
As in every other countries in this world, there’s always rules and regulations governing the import and export of goods in and out of the country. Government agencies are being setup to perform this tasks. As such, it’s important that an importer / exporter knows which goverment office is authorised to approve the purchase / export of certain goods.
Just to spice up things a little, after all the above boring stuff, here’s a video clip showing how the lock systems in Panama Canal, and similarly in other parts of the world, works.
What’s the difference between a shipping agent and a shipping line. To top it all off, who else is within the chain? Refer to others within the industry.
Thought i should try on topics which are a little more specific to situations within shipping. Thus, a write up on the topic of General Average. A generous contribution by Mr Yim on the same topic of General Average - An Overview is also available.
