Inai Kiara’s role in shipbuilding lauded

22nd July, 2010: MALAYSIA is on the right track towards development due to the participation of local companies in the shipbuilding industry, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said yesterday.

Citing Japan as an example, the Prime Minister’s wife said the industry was one of Japan’s focus in rebuilding itself economically after the Second World War.

“Any initiative to develop this industry is most welcome as it would not only encourage growth but strengthen the national shipping industry.

“I believe that Inai Kiara Sdn Bhd’s participation in the industry, specifically with the construction of the specialised cutter suction dredger, will spur the industry further,” she said at the launch of the dredger, CSD ‘Inai Ixora’, in Pulau Indah, Port Klang.

Also present were Inai Kiara Sdn Bhd executive chairman Datuk Gulzar Mohamad Noor Mohamed and Deputy Transport Minister Tuan Jelaing Mersat.

Rosmah praised the company’s smart partnership in constructing the RM250 million dredger via its subsidiary Selat Melaka Shipbuilding Corporation Sdn Bhd (SMSCSB), with several European companies.

These companies are namely Vosta LMG, MAN Diesel, Van Der Leun and Vyuk Engineering.

The 13,200 horse-powered dredger was built on SMSCSB’s shipyard whose expansion plans Rosmah said would provide 10,000 job opportunities.

“The development of the shipyard is bound to add value to the country’s shipping industry.

“I am certain it would put Malaysia on the world map as a new location to build and restore dredgers,” she said.

Earlier in his speech, Gulzar Mohamad said the company will be constructing another five dredgers worth RM1.6 billion in total.

These five are four trailing suction hopper dredgers and a cutter suction dredger.
