Malaysia considers limiting ship numbers in Malacca Strait

MALAYSIAN Deputy Prime Minister Seri Najib Tun Razak wants a limit imposed on the number of ships using the Malacca Strait to be considered for safety reasons, reports The Malaysia Star.

Mr Razak said traffic had increased from 44,000 ships in 1999 to 70,000 in 2007,reported The Associated Press, adding that experts estimate the world’s busiest waterway throughput may increase to 120,000 vessels a year by 2015.

It is said that Malaysia has already spent MYR200 million (US$60.6 million) on navigational aids in the straits and that a very high level traffic could become too dangerous and costly.
